A report by the BBC said that the victims were from 33 different nationalities. The Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 passenger had crashed soon after the take-off on Sunday morning. Ethiopian Airlines Corporate Communications Director Asrat Begashaw has said that the airline was due to hold a press conference shortly.

Meanwhile condolence messages have been pouring on the tragic accident. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has sent condolences to relatives who had lost ‘loved ones.’ His office tweeted, “The Office of the PM, on behalf of the Government and people of Ethiopia, would like to express it’s deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya this morning.”

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta tweeted, “We are saddened by the news of an Ethiopian Airlines passenger aircraft that is reported to have crashed 6 minutes after takeoff en route to Kenya. My prayers go to all the families and associates of those on board.”

The Boeing 737 MAX 8, according to a report by CNN, is the same type of plane as the Indonesian Lion Air jet that crashed soon after take-off from Jakarta last year, killing 189 people.

However, Geoffrey Thomas, the editor in chief of Airline Ratings, told CNN that the Ethiopian Airlines crash on Sunday had “significant differences” to the Lion Air crash last year. On the Lion Air flight, there were ‘wild fluctuations in air speed and… we continued to get data from the plane all the way down to impact.’

83 passengers were killed in January 2010, when an Ethiopian Airlines passenger flight from Beirut has crashed. Seven crew members on board too had died in the accident.
