Video: UP Police orders suspension of cops after TV journalist thrashed, allegedly urinated ‘in mouth’ by GRP personnel

The Uttar Pradesh Police have promised strict action against guilty cops who were accused of stripping a journalist and urinating in his mouth in the state’s Shamli district on Tuesday night. This was after a journalist working for News 24 news channel alleged that he was beaten, stripped naked and urinated in his mouth by Government Railway Police personnel as he arrived with his team to cover the derailment of a train near Dhimanpura station.

Journalist Amit Sharma of News 24 TV channel was quoted as saying, “I was locked up, stripped and they urinated right into my mouth.”

Reacting to the development, Shamli’s Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Pandey termed the incident ‘unfortunate’ and promised strict action against the guilty officials. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Police have already ordered the suspension of the local SHO and a constable. A tweet by the state police said, “We have come across a video where a journalist has been beaten up & put up in a lock up. DGP UP OP Singh has ordered for immediate suspension of SHO GRP Shamli Rakesh Kumar & Const. Sanjay Pawar. Strict punishment shall be accorded to policemen misbehaving with citizens.”

In the video shared by news agency ANI, the journalist could be seen being thrashed mercilessly by people in civil clothes, believed to be local GRP and police officials.

Manak Gupta of News 24 shared a video of his colleague being locked up at the police station.
