Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma has become an object of public ridicule after he claimed that Sita was a test-tube baby. The video of Yogi Adityanath’s deputy making the stunning claim has gone viral on social media now.
In the video, Sharma is seen as saying, “When Sita was born there must have been something like a test-tube baby. (Her father King) Janak ploughed the land and a baby came out of an earthen pot, she became Sita. This means technology similar to a test-tube baby must have existed,”
Sharma was reportedly speaking at an event to mark the Hindi Journalism Day.
His comments have earned him public ridicule on social media, where users and his political adversaries have been mocking him.

Speaking at the same event, he also endorsed equally astonishing claims made by Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb’s that internet and satellite communications existed in India thousands of years ago. Among other things, Sharma, who’s one of the two deputy Chief Ministers in the Uttar Pradesh government, said that journalism had first started in the Mahabharata period.
“It (journalism) started during Mahabharata,” the UP deputy chief minister said at an event to mark the ‘Hindi Journalism Day’. The minister also cited various instances from the Indian epic to strengthen his claim.
He said Sanjay, the mythological character who was Dhritarashtra’s charioteer, sitting at Hastinapur, narrated a bird’s eye view of the war of Mahabharata, to Dhritarashtra. “Yeh live telecast nahi to aur kya hai (if it is not live telecast, then what is it ?),” Sharma asked.
The BJP minister didn’t stop at this and equated another character, Narada, with the present-day Google.
“Your Google has started now, but our Google started long time back. ‘Narad Muni’ was the epitome of information. He could reach anywhere and transfer a message from one place to another by saying ‘Narayana’ three times,” he said. Sharma also urged all to remember one’s glorious past and history.
This is not the first time that a BJP leader has courted controversy by claiming that advanced technological and medical procedures like plastic surgery, nuclear tests, the internet and even the gravitation theory were all present during ancient times.
In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that Lord Ganesha was the product of plastic surgery. A year later, PM Modi had said the account of Karna’s birth in Mahabharata indicated that “people were aware of genetic science”.
