Sakshi Malik asks Khattar government if announcements made after Olympic win were for ‘media only’

Olympics bronze medallist wrestler Sakshi Malik has alleged that Haryana’s Manohar Lal Khattar government had not fulfilled its promise to pay her incentives it announced after her historic medal win at the Rio Games last year.

Sakshi took to Twitter to make her frustration known.

She tweeted, “I fulfilled my promise of winning a medal. When will Haryana government fulfill its promise?”

In a separate tweet, she asked if the announcement made by Khattar government was only for media.

She wrote, “Announcements made by Haryana Government after my OLYMPIC MEDAL win were for MEDIA ONLY? (sic)”

Haryana’s controversial minister, Anil Vij, reacted saying that the government had given her Rs 2.5 crore in cheque.

Vij also added that that the state government had also created a post for the wrestler after she wanted a job in the MD University.

A day later, Sakshi tweeted thanking the government for the ‘monetary appreciation’ but asked when the ‘rest of the promises’ will be fulfilled.

She wrote, “I m highly thnkful to HARYANA Government for the monetary appreciation bt REST OF THE PROMISES r yet 2 be fulfilled. (sic)”

Cash rewards and incentives amounting to at least Rs 3.5 crore were announced by the Haryana government after Sakshi created history at the Rio Games last year by becoming the first woman wrestler from India to win an Olympic medal.

Government of Haryana — Sakshi’s state — had announced before Olympics Rs 6 crore for gold medallists, Rs 4 crore for silver and Rs 2.5 crore for bronze winners. The 24-year-old girl from Rohtak had clinched a bronze medal in the 58kg freestyle category.
