Buoyed by his party’s recent electoral successes, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said that he will not let Prime Minister sleep till he waived off farmers’ loans. Speaking to reporters that he had the support of all ‘opposition parties’ in his demand for waiver of farm loans.
He said, “We will not let Prime Minister Modi sleep till he waives off loans of farmers, all opposition parties will unitedly demand this. Till now PM has not waived off a single rupee of farmers.”
Farm loan waver was a key election promises of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Within minutes of taking charge of the government, the Congress chief ministers in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on Monday cleared the files on farm loans waiver.
Taking a dig at the Modi government, Gandhi said, “JPC, Rafale, farm loan waivers, demonetization, typo errors will soon emerge in everything. People have been lied to, farmers & small traders are being looted. Demonetisation is the biggest scam in the world.”
When asked about the Delhi High Court sentencing Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to life for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Gandhi said that he had already made his position on the issue clear in the past. News agency ANI quoted him as saying, “I have made my position on the riots very clear, and I have said this before. This press conference is about the farmers of the country and that Mr.Modi refuses to waive off even 1 rupee of loan.”
The Delhi High Court on Monday had reversed the lower court’s order to acquit Kumar before sentencing him to life.
