Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may have actively campaigned for her brother and Congress President Rahul Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi in Amethi and Raebareli in the past, but she has always shied away from accepting any official roles in the party.

However, it has all changed after Rahul Gandhi announced on Wednesday that Priyanka Gandhi had been made the All India Congress Committee General Secretary for East UP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The official communication read, “Honourable Congress President has also appointed Smt Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. She will be taking charge with effect on first week of February 2019.”

It’s not clear if Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will also enter electoral politics and contest this year’s Lok Sabha polls.

Her husband Robert Vadra took to Facebook to congratulate her. He wrote, “Congratulations P… always by your side in every phase of your life. Give it your best.”

Congress leader Rajiv Shukla said, “This will help in revival of Congress not only in Uttar Pradesh but the entire country. She will take charge after 1 February once she returns from abroad.” Another Congress leader Motilal Vohra told news agency ANI, “The responsibility given to Priyanka ji is very important. This will not only have an effect on eastern Uttar Pradesh but also other regions.”

Jyotiraditya Sicndia has been made the AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh West. These appointments assume significance in light of this year’s Lok Sabha polls. The Congress is not a part of the non-BJP grand alliance comprising the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal.
