The CBI on Wednesday arrested Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister and veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram in Chennai. Karti was taken into custody immediately after he landed at Chennai airport from London.
Sources said that the former finance minister’s son is being questioned inside the airport before he’s taken to Delhi later today.
The Enforcement Directorate had filed a case against him last year alleging fraud in the grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving foreign investment of over Rs 300 crore in 2007 when P Chidambaram was the union finance minister. He’s alleged to have received a kickback of Rs 10 lakh.
A Delhi court had earlier this week sent Karti’s chartered accountant to 14 days of judicial custody in the same case. Last week Karti had approached the Supreme Court seeking a stay on ED summons against him.
Earlier this month, Karti had also appeared before the ED for the second time in connection with the case, as reported PTI. He had reportedly told the ED that he was appearing before the agency “under protest”. He was first grilled by the agency on 18 January.
One of the allegations against Karti is that he took bribe in 2007 to clear foreign investment worth around Rs. 300 crore in television company INX Media, using the influence of his father, who was then the Union finance minister. Two individuals who owned the company then were Peter and Indrani Mukerjea. Both are currently in jail in jail on charges of murdering Mukerjea’s daughter Sheena Bora.
The Congress has reacted angrily calling the arrest ‘vendetta politics’ by the BJP led government at the Centre. Taking to Twitter, the party’s chief spokesperson, Randeep Surjewala said, “Classical diversionary tactic to hide Scams & Colossal Corruption that is being exposed on a daily basis,be it NiMo+Choksi,D.D.Jewellers and Rotomac.”
