In a major setback to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the CIC on Friday ordered the universities of Delhi and Gujarat to respond to all RTI applications with regards to PM’s educational qualifications.
The order came after Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote to the CIC asking for its intervention in releasing the information on Modi’s educational qualification.

In its order, the CIC Sridhar Acharyulu also directed the Prime Minister’s Office to provide “specific number and year” of the degrees of Prime Minister to his alma mater– Delhi University and Gujarat University– to make it easy for them to locate these records. said, “The educational qualifications related information about public authority or public servant or political leader occupying constitutional position is not hit by any exception under Section 8 of RTI Act. It cannot be stated as personal or private information also….
“Commission requires the PMO to provide the specific number and year of the degree, and PG degree to the Delhi University and the Gujarat University offices that it will be easy for them to search and provide any documents relating to it.
“The Commission directs the PIOs of Delhi University and Gujarat University, Ahmadabad to make best possible search for the information regarding degrees in the name of “ Mr. Narendra Damodar Modi” in the year 1978 (Graduation in DU) and 1983 (Post Graduation in GU) and provide it to the appellant Mr. Kejriwal, as soon as possible.”
Modi’s educational degree has been an enigma since he assumed the Prime Minister’s Office. Several attempts by jantakareporter.com to obtain a clarity on his degrees through several RTI requests were futile.

In the case of Hans Raj Jain, who sought the details of the students who passed in 1978 with names starting from N (Narendra) and M (Modi), the Delhi University had claimed that it will not be possible to search from lakhs of external students unless roll number was provided.
