BJP’s Kairana MP Hukum Singh dies in Noida

BJP MP from Kairana, Hukum Singh, died on Saturday at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida. He was 79.

A seven-term member of Uttar Pradesh assembly, Singh had a rare distinction of serving the governments of Narayan Dutt Tiwari (Congress), Kalyan Singh (BJP), Ram Prakash Gupta (BJP), Rajnath Singh (BJP) and Mayawati (BSP) in the state.

He had courted a huge controversy in 2016 just before the crucial UP assembly polls by sensationally alleging that Hindus of Kairana were being forced to leave their villages due to fears of Muslims. He was later forced to make a U-turn and admit that he had wrongly given a communal angle to the exodus of family from Kairana.

He had said, “By mistake someone in my team mentioned Hindu families. I asked them to change that. I stick to my stand that this is not a Hindu-Muslim issue. This is just a list of people of who have left under duress.”

He was also named an accused in 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi express his sorrow on Singh’s demise. His tweet said, “Anguished by the demise of MP and veteran leader from Uttar Pradesh, Shri Hukum Singh Ji. He served the people of UP with great diligence and worked for the welfare of farmers. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief.”
