Renowned poet and lyricist Gopal Das Neeraj has passed away at the age of 93. He was ailing for a long time.
Neeraj was born on 4 January 1925 in Puravali near Mahewa of Etawah in Uttar Pradesh. He was a receipient of Padma Awards as well. He had suffered a head injury following a fall at his house in Agra and was undergoing treatment at a hospital there, Dr Rajesh Malhotra, chief of the AIIMS trauma centre, said.
He was also known for his work on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Chanda Aur Bijli and Patanga.
Tributes have started to pour in for the legend, who’s no more. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Saddened by the demise of noted poet and lyricist Shri Gopaldas ‘Neeraj.’ Shri Neeraj’s unique style connected him with people from all walks of life, across generations. His works are unforgettable gems, which will live on and inspire many. Condolences to his admirers..”
President Ram Nath Kovind wrote, “Sad to hear of the passing of veteran poet and lyricist Gopal Das Neeraj. From “Prem Pujari” to “Cha Cha Cha” his compositions and film songs are still remembered, still heard and still stir the soul. Condolences to his family, friends and admirers.”
Lyricist Javed Akhtar wrote, “Neeraj ji was a shayar of Hindi and a kavi of urdu . A poet of “Hindustani” who ruled the hearts of millions for almost 7 decades . Neeraj ji we will never forget you.”
Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh wrote, “Saddened by the death of noted poet and lyricist Dr Gopaldas ‘Neeraj’. Have been listening to his poetry and songs since childhood and will always remember the depth he brought to his gems, which will continue to inspire generations.”
