The winner of Bigg Boss 11 and popular TV actress, Shilpa Shinde, on Tuesday officially entered active politics by joining the Congress in Mumbai. Welcoming her into the party was the Congress’ Mumbai unit president, Sanjay Nirupam.
Speaking to Janta Ka Reporter from Mumbai, Nirupam said that he was happy to have Shilpa, a popular face in the entertainment industry, in the party.
Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam:
Shilpa Shinde is a popular artist and she had plenty of options of joining any political party. But she chose the Indian National Congress. When her team approached us expressing her desire to join the Congress and work for the organisation, we reciprocated by welcoming her.
When asked if Shilpa has expressed her desire to contest this year’s Lok Sabha polls, Nirupam said, “She’s a popular name and enjoys considerable support. We will be more than happy to consider her request if she wishes to contest elections.”
Speaking to reporters, Shilpa said that only the Congress was capable of bringing about a change in the Indian politics today.
Bigg Boss winner Shilpa Shinde:
I am happy with the way the Congress has responded to my request to join the party. Even I want Rahul Gandhi to become the prime minister.
During her interaction with the media, Shilpa made a gaffe when she said that Priyanka Gandhi had just ‘won the election.’ She was soon corrected by Nirupam, which prompted her to say, “Of course, I am sure she (Priyanka Gandhi) will soon win elections too. Please give me time to breathe.”
The 42-year-old had started her acting career in 1999 but became a household name after she played the character of Angoori Bhabhi in &TV’s popular TV show Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain. In October 2017, she took part in Bigg Boss and went on to win the competition.
Her association with Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain had abruptly ended in 2016 after she accused the makers of the show of sexually harassing her. She was later replaced by another Marathi actress Shubhangi Atre.
Shilpa is the latest glamorous face to join the Mumbai Congress under Nirupam. Last year in October, he had welcomed Hasin Jahan, a model and the estranged wife of Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami in the party.
The Congress may be tempted to field Shilpa as its candidate in this year’s Lok Sabha polls as Nirupam hinted in his conversation with Janta Ka Reporter. Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats, but the Congress had only managed to win two seats in 2014. However, its popularity has been on the rise since then as the Congress-NCP alliance won Bhandara-Gondiya Lok Sabha bypoll last year in June.
The party hopes to reverse its electoral fortunes in this year’s parliamentary polls by riding piggyback on the anti-incumbency against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
