The Netherlands on Wednesday suffered the worst-ever defeat in the World Cup as Glenn Maxwell broke the World Cup record.
Batting first, Australia piled up a massive total of 399-8 with David Warner and Maxwell hitting breathtaking centuries. Warner was out for 104 while Maxwell made 106 from just 44 deliveries. Maxwell’s 40-ball century was the fastest in the history of the World Cup, beating the previous record by South Africa’s Aiden Markram, who achieved the feat in the ongoing World Cup earlier this month.
Steve Smith made 71 while Marnus Labuschagne contributed with 62.
In reply, the Netherlands were bowled out for 90 runs in 21 overs. Adam Zampa took 4-8 to become the leading wicket-taker in the tournament,
Speaking about his performance, Maxwell said that he conscious of not doing well with the bat in the last few matches, adding that today’s knock will give a huge boost to his confidence.
This was the biggest margin of victory by any side in the World Cup. In terms of the history of One Day Internationals, India’s 317-run thrashing of Sri Lanka in January is still the biggest margin of victory by any side.
De Leede’s figures of 2-115 in 10 overs was the most expensive in the history of One Day Internationals.
