Emma Raducanu has become the first British woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final in 44 years. The British teen sensation will face 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez of Canada for the US Open title.

British teenager defeated 17th seed Maria Sakkari from Greece in straight sets 6-1 6-4 as she created a place in the history book. What made her semi-final win even more special was the presence of Virginia Wade – the last British woman to achieve that feat at Wimbledon in 1977.

Raducanu’s juggernaut at the US Open has already assumed folkloric proportions given that she had to play three qualifying matches to be able to play in this year’s US Open. The ruthlessness of her game can be gauged from the fact that she has not dropped a set in any of her nine matches at Flushing Meadows.

Raducanu had reached the last 16 stage of this year’s Wimbledon, catapulting to her instant stardom.

This is only the eighth time that two teenagers would be fighting each other for a Grand Slam glory in the Open era.

Martina Navratilova, the 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, said that the success of Raducanu and Fernandez indicated ‘changing of the guard’ moment. She told Amazon Prime, “When you make history you do it at one level or two. Emma is doing it at so many levels. You can’t even think about the repercussions. We’ve been hyping her up but it’s happening. She’s backing it up.”
