Afghanistan stun Sri Lanka to brighten their semi-final hopes in World Cup

Afghanistan on Monday stunned Sri Lanka to register their third victory in the ongoing cricket World Cup. With today’s win, Afghanistan have now become a serious contender for a semi-final spot.

Batting first, Sri Lanka could only manage 241 all out in 49.3 overs. Fazalhaq Farooqi was the most successful bowler for Afghanistan as he claimed four wickets by conceding just 34 runs in 10 0vers. Pathum Nissanka was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with a knock of 46 runs.

In reply, Afghanistan achieved the target by losing just three wickets in 45.2 overs. Azmatullah Omarzai remained unbeaten at 73 from 63 balls while Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi made 62 and 58 respectively.

With today’s win, Afghanistan have climbed to the fifth position in the points table. They had beaten Pakistan in their last match. Only top four teams will qualify for the semi-finals.

India are the only team that have yet to lose any match in the competition. The hosts had defeated England in their last outing, ensuring the early exit of the defending world champions.
