Haitian President Jovenel Moise has been assassinated at home in Port-au-Prince. His wife, the first lady of the country, is reported to have been rushed to hospital after sustaining injuries.
In his last tweet, Moise had announced the appointment of a new prime minister. He had written, “I have appointed Citizen Ariel Henry to the post of Prime Minister. He will have to form an open government including the vital forces of the Nation, solve the glaring problem of insecurity and support the CEP for the realization of general elections and the referendum.’
The news was confirmed by Haiti’s interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph. According to reports, a group of unidentified individuals attacked the private residence of Moise overnight and shot him dead.
Joseph said that ‘all measures had been taken to guarantee to continuance of the state.’
53-year-old Moise was in office since February 2017, after Michel Martelly resigned. Moise’s tenure was marred by allegations of corruption and anti-government protests.
