Voting for 59 constituencies in six states and Delhi’s seven seats took mplace in the second last phase of the Lok Sabha polls. Among those states going for polls today were 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 10 seats in Haryana, eights constituencies each in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, seven seats in Delhi and four in Jharkhand.
However, the sixth phase of polls saw significant reduction on the voting percentage. Delhi recorded just over 50.9% polling, while the voting percentage in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh were little over 50 and 60 percent respectively.
West Bengal recorded the highest 80.13 percent voting in the sixth phase. In Haryana, the voter turnout was 62.12 percent, while in Bihar, 55 percent people took part in today’s voting.
The BJP had swept these seats in 2014 parliamentary polls, when it won 45 seats. Eight had gone to the Trinamool Congress, two to the Congress, while the Samajwadi Party and Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP had won one each.
Key names whose fate will be decided today include Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and Union minister Maneka Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh, former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Union ministers Rao Inderjit Singh and Krishan Pal Gurjar in Haryana, AICC general secretary and Congress candidate Jyotiraditya Scindia and Union minister and BJP nominee Narendra Singh Tomar in Madhya Pradesh and Gautam Gambhir and Manoj Tiwari in Delhi.
Also going to polls is Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal seat, where the BJP has fielded a terror-accused, Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, who is pitted against former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijay Singh.
The campaigning ended for these seats on Friday. The counting for all 542 seats will be held on 23 May.
