Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday joined the #RippedJeansTwitter debate following Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat’s seemingly misogynistic remarks about women. Rawat had cast aspersion on the moral values of those women, who wore ripped jeans and displayed their knees in public. While his comments evoked angry reactions from women activists, journalists and social media users, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took a brutal potshot at BJP leaders particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi by sharing their photos in knickers.

Sharing a photo of BJP leaders including Nitin Gadkari, PM Modi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, the Congress General Secretary for UP wrote, “Oh my God!!! Their knees are showing” She ended her social media post with the trending hashtag #RippedJeansTwitter.

Earlier, Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal, anti-rape activist Yogita Bhanaya and singer Sona Mohapatra had shared their photos in shorts and ripped jeans to slam the BJP chief Minister for his comments about women’s character.

Speaking at a workshop organised by the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in Dehradun, Rawat narrated a story of his plane travel when he had met a woman passenger, who was sitting next to him with two of her children. Rawat said that he was shocked to see the woman in ripped jeans even though she ran an NGO and her husband was a professor. The reason for Rawat’s disappointment was that the woman in ripped jeans did not present the right examples to children.
