From Sachin Tendulkar to PM Modi, India pay tributes to Yashpal Sharma, India’s 1983 World Cup hero, on his death

Tributes have poured in after former Indian cricketer, Yashpal Sharma, passed away of cardiac arrest at the age of 66. Sharma was a member of the Indian cricket team that won the World Cup in 1983.

Reacting to Sharma’s death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Shri Yashpal Sharma Ji was a much beloved member of the Indian cricket team, including the legendary 1983 squad. He was an inspiration for teammates, fans as well as budding cricketers. Anguished by his passing away. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”



Former India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar tweeted, “Shocked and deeply pained by the demise of Yashpal Sharma ji. Have fond memories of watching him bat during the 1983 World Cup. His contribution to Indian cricket shall always be remembered. My sincere condolences to the entire Sharma family.”



Sharma is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. Only a few days ago, the late cricketer paid tribute to the passing of actor Dilip Kumar. He had also revealed how Dilip Kuamr had played a key role in his selection in the Indian team after the latter watched him score centuries in a domestic match.
