BJP left red-faced after social media army’s use of Manikarnika clip to launch #DeshDrohiScindia campaign backfires

BJP’s social media army is known for launching sustained campaign targeting their political opponents with an intention to give them grief. The social media war has become even more intense in the election year given that the stakes are high. However, on Monday, the social media army of the saffron party were left red-faced after they borrowed a scene from Kangana Ranaut’s recently released Manikarnika to attack the Congress.

The party launched a new hashtag on Twitter,#DeshDrohiScindia, to drive home a point that Scindia rulers had betrayed Maharani Laxmibai during the freedom struggle of 1857 against the British Raj. To support their case against Scindias, the BJP’s social media army used a clip from Manikarnika, where Kangana is seen ordering the Scindia ruler to leave the kingdom after he was allegedly found siding with the British.

While posting the clip, BJP’s Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, tagged Congress MP and a Scindian scion Jyotiraditya Scindia and wrote, “Must watch scene of Manikarnika. exposing the real face of @JM_Scindia, Rajvansh #DeshdrohiScindia”

No sooner had he posted the clip, the hashtag began to trend nationally with thousands of tweets being posted on the topic. However, little did Bagga and his troops realise the extent of embarrassment he had caused to his own party. Journalists and social media users reminded them that famous members of Scindia family had also been in the BJP. Some reminded how Vijaya Raje Scindia, also known as Rajmata of Gwalior was one of the founding members of the BJP. Her daughter Vasundhara Raje Scindia has been a two-term chief minister of Rajasthan from the BJP. Another member of Scindia family is Yoashodhara Raje Scindia, who’s current a BJP MLA in Madhya Pradesh.
