Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor Munmun Dutta has issued an extraordinary apology after the demand for her arrest gained momentum in light of her casteist slur aimed at SC/ST community. The actor said that she ended up uttering the word due to her language barrier.

While commenting about her make-up in a video, the TV actor had said, “My lipstick colour is pink and that’s about it. I also applied a light blush because I was going to appear on YouTube and I didn’t want to look like a bhangi (a casteist slur reserved for Dalits in India).”

Her comments evoked angry reactions from netizens, who demanded her arrest under the SC/ST laws.

Faced with threats of an arrest, Munmun issued a detailed clarification saying that she had pronounced the word due to her lack of knowledge about the language. She wrote, “This is in reference to a video that I posted yesterday wherein one word used by me has been misinterpreted. It was never said with the intent of insult, intimidate, humiliate or hurt anyone’s feelings.”

She added, “Because of my language barrier, I was genuinely misinformed about the meaning of the word. Once I was made aware of its meaning, I immediately took the part down. I have utmost respect for every single person from every caste, creed or gender and acknowledge their immense contribution to our society or nation.”

Munmun has been playing the character of Babita in the famous TV series Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.
