Glenn Maxwell on Tuesday played the greatest ever ODI knock as he hit an unbeaten double century to pull off a sensational win against Afghanistan. Maxwell batten valiantly to guide Australia to a remarkable win after the side was reduced to 91-7.
Player Of The Match Maxwell said that the fact that he hadn’t done a high intensity exercise in this heat, it posed serious problems to him during the match. This was in reference to his cramp that prevented him from stealing singles or twos. Maxwell was seen in severe pain even when Australia needed 100 runs to win.
He was seen hitting sixes and fours by standing on his crease. The physio had to rush to the ground on a number of occasions to assist. At one point, Adam Zampa was seen preparing himself to replace Maxwell, but he had to return to the dressing room after Maxwelld decided to stay on.
Maxwell’s knock of 201 not out is the highest individual score by any player in the World Cup. This is also the highest score by any Australian player in the history of One Day International.
Earlier in the match, Afghanistan stunned everyone by posting a total of 291-7 in 50 overs with Ibrahim Zadran hitting Afghanistan’s first World Cup century.
Australia’s run chase started on a disastrous note as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. However, Maxwell had other plans as he decided to take on the Afghanistan bowlers. He was dropped when he was batting at 33. This proved costly for Afghanistan as Maxwell went on to play the historic knock of 201 not out and guide his side to a sensational victory.
