Former US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, one of the key architects of Iraq war, has died aged at the age of 88.

Rumsfeld was one of the biggest proponents of the Iraq war in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

In 2003, the US armed forces caused largescale deaths and destruction in Iraq claiming that the Saddam Hussain regime possessed weapons of mass destruction. Neither has any links been established between the 9/11 attacks and the then Saddam Hussain regime, nor any weapons of mass destruction have been found till date.

Though Rumnsfield resigned three years after the war, he never apologised for the largescale of deaths of innocent Iraqis and damage to their properties.

Many Twitter users were seen rejoicing his death with ‘rot in hell’ becoming a dominant theme of social media reaction.

According to one estimate, more than two lakh innocent Iraqis were killed as a result of the US military offensive in the country. The US attacks also destroyed the Iraqi economy, one of the best in the Gulf region then.
