England on Tuesday stunned Germany 2-0 at Wembley to progress to the quarter-final stage of the Euro 2020. Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane scored for England in the 75th and 86th minute of the game respectively.

With today’s win, England ended their 55 years of wait to defeat Germany in a knockout stage.

Enjoying the home advantage, England dominated the first half but Germany began to control the ball in the second half before Raheem Sterling netted home. It didn;t take long for the English captain to extend the lead to 2-0.

With today’s goal, Sterling has now scored 15 goals in his last 20 appearances in all competitions for England. Curiously, the English striker had failed to score in 27 matches before enjoying this unbelievable run.

Former England striker, Alan Shearer, told BBC that manager Gareth Southgate deserved to be applauded for the sensational win against Germany. He said, “The manager deserves huge credit for sticking with Sterling. There was a lot of criticism flying around before the tournament, and when the manager sticks with you you’ve got to go out and perform, and nobody’s performed better than Raheem Sterling in this tournament for England. He’s been their go-to guy for the games.”

England midfielder Declan Rice told BBC One, “It’s incredible, a lot of people had written us off in the group stage, complaints about the performances, not scoring enough but we want to put people wrong, with a full house everyone had the fire in the belly to one, knock Germany out and two progress in the tournament.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was another star of the match as he saved two brilliant goal attempts by Germany’s Timo Werner and Kai Havertz in each half. Pickford has yet to concede a single goal in this edition of the Euro championship.

England will now face either Sweden or Ukraine in the quarter-final.
