The Supreme Court on Monday slapped a fine of Rs. 50,000 on former UP Shia Waqf Board chairman Wasim Rizvi for seeking to remove a few verses from the Holy Quran. The top court also called his petition on the Holy Quran ‘absolutely frivolous.’
Soon after the hearing began, Justice RF Nariman asked Rizvi’s lawyer, if he wished to go ahead with the petition. “Are you seriously pressing the petition?”, Livelaw quoted Justice Nariman as saying.
Rizvi’s lawyer, RK Raizada said that his petition was confined to the regulation of madrasas claiming that certain verses of the Holy Quran preached violence against non-believers.
The top court refused to entertain the argument against the Holy Quran and dismissed Rizvi’s petition by also imposing a financial penalty of Rs. 50,000.
In his petition, Rizvi had claimed that certain verses in the Holy Quran posed threats to the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of the country. He had asked the court to impunge at least 26 such verses.
