Hours after the search engine giant Google apologised to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Top Ten Criminals’ fiasco, nothing seems to have changed.
The search engine is still throwing up PM’s image- thrice in the first two rows- if one searched ‘top ten criminals in India’ on Google.
On Wednesday the supporters and detractors of Modi fought on social media after this began to be reported. The hashtag #TopTenCriminals soon became a top national trend.
PM Modi’s first picture is right next to the former American gangster Al Capone, who achieved notoriety due to his involvement in a series of crimes, gambling, extortion and prostitution. Other featured names include Joseph Kony of the Lord’s Resistance Army (responsible for killing hundreds of civilians in Uganda), Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri and Osama bin Laden.
Not so long ago, Google was in news for causing embarrassment to another head of state, Barack Obama.
It had to apologise for offence caused by vandalism of its Maps tools that meant that users searching for racist terms such as ‘nigger house’ or ‘nigger king’ were being redirected to the White House.
