BJP MP from Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh, Anshul Verma, on Wednesday resigned from the party after being denied a ticket in this year’s parliamentary polls. Angry over the party’s decision, Verma submitted his resignation papers and other documents to a real chowkidar deployed at the party office.
The video of Verma submitting his documents to the party office’s watchman has now gone viral. The development has also gained momentum in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign to add chowkidar prefix before his name amidst the Congress’ campaign attacking him with chowkidar chor hai jibe. After Modi added chowkidar to his name on Twitter, every BJP leader and minister had followed suit.
Hours later, Verma joined the Samajwadi Party in the presence of its chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Meanwhile, the video of Verma handing over his papers to a watchman has become a butt of jokes on social media.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Verma launched a tirade against the BJP, accusing it of focusing on the party’s own development in the last five years. He said, “When I look at the BJP’s new office in Delhi and similar offices, built with hundreds of crores of rupees, in each district, you realise that the party had believed in its own development with help of others.”
He added, “How many of you will want to make your children chowkidar? This is all show off or just sloganeering. I was asked why I had not written chowkidar on my wall. I just want to say one thing. I’ve worked towards development and will continue to do so. I will always remain Anshul and not a chowkidar.”
Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to go to polls in seven phases with the counting is set for 23 May.
