22-year-old IIT-Delhi student declared Promising Young Entrepreneur in Singapore

Chirag Kapil of IIT Delhi was named the most Promising Young Entrepreneur by the 8th Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition in Singapore.

While bringing the glory home, not to mention an award prize of $5,000, the timing couldn’t have been better for this 22-year-old entrepreneur. With Raksha Bandhan just around the corner, his team Leaf, which has also created a pendant linked with mobile app to send distress signals, has also gifted women the much-needed peace of mind.

“I feel brilliant. It is one of the most exciting things that happened in my life. (I am) very privileged to be called Most Promising Young Entrepreneur,” Kapil was quoted by news agency PTI.

Manik Mehta, Ayush Banka, Avinash Bansal, Chirag Kapil and team leader Paras Batra have designed an app embedded pendant SAFER that can communicate with your phone, send distress signals and location immediately.

In the event the wearer of the pendant feels threatened, all she has to do is press the pendant twice. This action will make the device communicate with an app installed in the wearer’s phone, send out a call for help to contacts listed as guardians along with location.
Aside from this, in the more innovative take, it also alerts all other SAFER users in close radius of the individual’s location, thereby being able to bring help faster when it’s most needed. This idea has secured Leaf the second place in the Lee Kuan Yew competition and a cash reward of $12,000.
While Leaf has already served around 50,000 customers in India and Turkey, they are hoping to raise $50,000 to expand their start-up further.
Their accolades of Singapore will certainly come quite handy in bringing their idea to fruition.
