India on Tuesday defeated South Africa by an innings and 202 runs after Shahbaz Nadeem quickly dismissed Theunis de Bruyn and Lungi Ngidi in quick succession. South Africa had ended the day three at 121-8.
India had scored 497-9 before declaring their innings. In response, South Africa were all out for 162 before they were forced to follow on by Indian captain Virat Kohli. Rohit Sharma was declared Man Of The Match and Man Of The Series for his 529 runs in the series.
Sharma thanked the team management for giving him the opportunity to open the innings. “It’s been a great start, so I don’t want to let it go,” he said.
For India, Mohammed Shami took three wickets, while Umesh Yadav and Shahbaz Nadeem picked up two each. Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin took one wicket each.
Nadeem, who was playing his first-ever Test match, finished the match with four wickets. India’s head coach Ravi Shastri heaped praises on off-spinner from Muzaffarpur.
“What was remarkable was the way he started. He had no nerves. The guy has taken 424 wickets. He just needed his time and opportunity,” Shastri said after the match.
South African skipper Faf du Plessis praised the Indian team calling the side ‘ruthless’ adding that they were tough to defeat at home. “They (India) showed us how to ball. Consistently line and length,” du Plessis said.
With today’s win, India won the Gandhi-Mandela bilateral series 3-0. Today’s win has placed India at the top with 240 points in the International Test rankings. New Zealand are placed second with just 60 points.
