The United Nations on Thursday overwhelmingly endorsed a resolution calling the US to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The text of the resolution said that any decisions regarding the status of the city were “null and void” and must be cancelled.

The non-binding resolution was approved by 128 countries, with 35 abstaining and nine others voting against. India, which has been an ally of Donald Trump under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too voted against the US.

US President Donald Trump warned countries, who voted against America, of consequences even their aids being cut in future. At a Cabinet meeting at the White House before the voting began at the UN, Trump had said that he would be “watching those votes” in the General Assembly when it meets in emergency session on Thursday over the US Jerusalem decision that has come under widespread flak, the Washington Post reported.

He had added, “They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars and then they vote against us,” he said. “Well, we’ll be watching those votes. Let them vote against us; we’ll save a lot. We don’t care. But this isn’t like it used to be, where they could vote against you, and then you pay them hundreds of millions of dollars and nobody knows what they’re doing.”

The President’s remarks came after Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, warned on Twitter that “the US will be taking names” of countries that support the resolution.

And in a letter she sent to more than 180 UN ambassadors of member nations, she said she would report back to Trump on how they voted. “We will take note of each and every vote on this issue,” she wrote.

Meanwhile, Israel rejected yet another UN resolutions detrimental to its interests after the United Nations overwhelming endorsed a resolution calling the US to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

“Israel rejects the UN resolution,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement, adding that Israel is “pleased by the high number of countries that have not voted in favor of the resolution.”

The notice said that “Israel thanks President (Donald) Trump for his firm stance in favor of Jerusalem and thanks the countries that voted together with Israel, together with the truth.”

Israel has been notorious to reject all UN resolutions against its illegal occupation of the Palestinian land and brutalities committed by its forces.

A similar resolution was vetoed by the US in the UN Security Council on Monday, but there are no veto rights at the General Assembly.
