Tamil Nadu BJP leader H Raja on Tuesday threatened to demolish the statue of famous reformer, Periyar, after his party workers demolished Lenin’s statue in Tripura.
Raja took to Facebook to publish the controversial post, which read, “Who is Lenin? What is the relevance he holds in India? What is the link between communalism and India? Lenin’s statues were destroyed in Tripura, tomorrow, in Tamil Nadu, casteist Periyar’s statues will be destroyed.” His post, written in Tamil, also included the video of Lenin’s statue being brought down by a bulldozer in Belonia town in Tripura.
His post elicited angry response from people in Tamil Nadu with the DMK working president, MK Stalin, demanding his immediate arrest. “No one dare touch EVR’s (Periyar) statue. H Raja made those comments to incite violence. He has been repeatedly doing this. He should be arrest and the Goondas Act slapped on him,” said DMK Working President, MK Stalin,” Stalin was quoted as saying.
Actor-politician Khushboo of the Congress dared the BJP to break the statue of Periyar. She wrote, “Let’s see if BJP has the guts to expel the dirty ‘echchai”raja.. and I challenge this sort.. give a date to break the statue of
#Periyar..I will be there.. let me see if you the guts to surpass me and many like me..even your shadow cannot touch the statue of #Periyar..”
Faced with widespread anger, Raja quickly deleted his post. The BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit was also quick to distance itself from Raja’s comments.
Periyar was a famous social reformer, who had launched the Self-Respect Movement and founded one of the first Dravidian political outfits, Dravidar Kazhagam.
A BJP mob had on Monday demolished the famous statue of Lenin in Tripura hours after the party won the state assembly polls ending the Left Front’s rule there. Several BJP leaders including Ram Madhav and Subramanian Swamy had rejoiced the demolition of the Lenin’s statue.
