In a series of tweets posted on Sunday, Suchitra wrote, “came home at 4.45 am 2 most aggressive/ ear shattering call of azaan. Nothing more lowlife & dumb than such extreme imposed religiousity. i wake up at Brahmamuhurt of my own accord & do my prayers & riyaz.& yoga. I dont need public loudspeakers to remind me of my God or my duty.

“nobody objects to azaan or prayers during decent hours. But to be wakung up entire neighbourhood at 5 am is not civilized.”

Suchitra did not stop here. Even in the midst of her Twitter outrage, she began to fervently share anti-Islam tweets posted by known right-wing bigots.

One such tweet was posted by IAS officer from Rajasthan, Sanjay Dixit, who wrote, “Azaan no longer a call to prayer. It’s an ‘in-your-face’ aggression. Loudspeaker Azaan is banned in Pakistan, but u dare not ban it in India.”

Faced with Twitter condemnation, she then issued a clarification saying that she had used similar harsh words for ‘gau-rakshaks.’

She wrote, “BTW ive used similar words for gaurakshaks & beef ban- how come u didnt notice then? This false & 4 convenience sense of persecution must end. (sic)”

While writing for her website earlier this year, the controversial former singer had written, “If I hear India’s intolerant towards Muslims, I’ll advise Muslims to move to Saudi Arabia”

Suchitra is also a former wife of director, Shekhar Kapur. She had made her acting debut in Bollywood opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa.

This is not the first time a singer has chosen to single out Azaan, which lasts for barely few minutes just fives times a day. In contrast, the use of loudspeakers are often used by people from other faiths during their religious programmes for far longer period.

Many on social media highlighted the irony in Suchitra’s tweet targetting Muslims and Islam.

In April, Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam had raised objections to the use of loudspeaker while addressing the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) in a flippant manner.

He had later chosen to delete his Twitter account after the microblogging site banned the account of another Muslim-hater and former singer, Abhijeet Bhattacharya.

Amidst raging debate over Azaan, a video of Priyanka Chopra praising the Muslim call for prayers had gone viral on social media platforms.
