Pratyusha Banerjee’s suicide: Indian actors who tragically ended their lives


Popular TV actor Pratyusha Banerjee committed suicide on Friday night.

The reason for the 24-year-old actor’s suicide is not yet known but there are reports of she suffering from depression for a long time.

She had shot to fame from popular TV series Balika Vadhu before taking part in two reality shows Colors’ Bigg Boss Sony TV’s Power Couple.

Here are the list of other actors, who ended their lives in tragic manner.


Jiah Khan: She worked in films like Nishabd, Ghajini and Houseful, before allegedly committing suicide by hanging herself at her residence. Jiah was brought up in England and had shifted to Mumbai with her mother Rabiya.


Divya Bharti:Once a co-star of Shah Rukh Khan in the popular movie Deewana, the 19-year old actor had fallen from the window of her fifth floor apartment around midnight on 5 April, 1993. This till date remains as one of the most shocking deaths ever. Whether the promising actress (who had risen within a short period and was expected to reach the top in the coming years of Indian Bollywood) committed suicide or met an accidental death still remains a mystery.
Kuljeet Randhawa: She was a popular model and television actress and had acted in several TV series such as Special Squad, Hip Hip Hurray and CATS. She committed suicide by hanging herself at her Juhu apartment on 8 February, 2006. She had clearly stated that she couldn’t cope with pressures of life in her suicide note.
Nafisa Joseph was a model-turned-video jockey. She had won the Miss India Universe 1997 pageant and was a semi-finalist in the Miss Universe 1997 pageant in Miami.

Nafisa Joseph: Randhawa’s co-star in CATS, she committed suicideby hanging herself in her flat in Mumbai on 29 July 2004. It was reported that her marriage to businessman Gautam Khanduja was scheduled to be held in a few weeks’ time. But it was called off after Joseph learnt that Khanduja was very much married and had allegedly lied to her about his divorce.

Silk Smitha: South Indian film industry’s sex-symbol Silk Smitha was found dead in her home in Saligramam near Chennai. She too reportedly died by hanging herself with a rope from the ceiling fan in her bedroom. In a suicide note that she had written in Telugu, she claimed that continual failure in life had led to frustration and made her take this drastic step. Vidya Balan’s The Dirty Picture was loosely based on the life of Silk Smitha. Bollywood blockbuster, Dirty Picture was reportedly made on her life.
Vivek Babajee: Popular fashion model Viveka Babajee, who shot to fame with the Kamasutra condom advertisement in the 1990s, committed suicide in her Bandra flat on the night of 25 June, 2010. Her body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the hall. Apparently different reasons are being cited for her suicide from breakdown in professional career, failed love relationship to financial losses.


Guru Dutt: Popular actor from the past and filmmaker Guru Dutt’s death due to a lethal combination of sleeping pills in excessive liquor is still debated as suicide though his family maintains its was an accident. Guru Dutt was not on good terms with wife Geeta Dutt while Waheeda Rehman whom he was reportedly in love with had also distanced herself from him.
