MP’s BJP govt gets inspired by Aamir Khan’s Dangal, declares it tax-free

Despite Aamir Khan facing backlash from top BJP leaders, some of whom had originally vowed to disrupt the release of Dangal for the actor’s comments on growing religious intolerance, the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh has now declared the movie tax-free.

Additionally, the sports drama’s success has prompted the state government to announce it will set up an academy to promote wrestling.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made the twin announcements on Saturday.

After watching the sports biopic, based on the life of Haryana wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, with his wife Sadhna in a cinema hall here last night, Chouhan tweeted “MP Government has decided to give tax-free status to Aamir Khan’s wrestling based movie `Dangal’.

In another tweet, he said, “To promote wrestling an academy will be set up in Madhya Pradesh.”

This is the fourth film to be declared tax-free in the state in recent times.

Other movies to enjoy this status since August 2014 were “Jai Gangaajal”, “Neerja” and “Mardaani”.

Dangal has already been made tax-free in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

A top BJP functionary in Madhya Pradesh, Kailash Vijayvargiya had famously warned asking his supporters to spoil the commercial gains of Aamir Khan’s film after the actor caused controversy by sharing his wife’s fear on growing religious intolerance under Narendra Modi government.

“When anybody says that intolerance is rising in our society, then it makes me a little angry. Then he has to be treated. His treatment is very necessary. One (Shah Rukh Khan) has been treated while other (Aamir) still needs treatment,” Vijayvargiya had warned.

The right-wing Hindutva brigade had also caused disruption during the release of Shah Rukh’s Dilwale after he too had voiced his opinion on religious intolerance.

Speaking at an event in November 2015, Aamir Khan had said, “That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make. She fears for her child. She fears what the atmosphere around us will be.”

Dangal has smashed all box office records and is reported to have collected close to Rs 400 crore.
