In a shameful development, a mosque was vandalised and around half-a-dozen muslims were allegedly beaten by a group of men in Haryana’s Karnal district on Wednesday.
According to reports, more than a dozen people barged into the masjid, abused the devotees and then thrashed them. The miscreants then broke the wall of the masjid in a bid to vandalise the property.
The incident took place at around 9:15 pm on Wednesday, when some members of the community were offering prayers, reciting Azan.
The victims alleged that a group of 20-25 people walked in, vandalized the mosque, broke speakers and thrashed those offering Namaz, reported Business Standard.
“We were offering Namaz like all other days, and suddenly a group of 20-25 people walked in and attacked us. We were threatened. Those people told us that if we offer Namaz again, we will be killed,” Muhammad Imran, one of the victims, told ANI.
Another victim said, “We had done nothing other than offering our daily Namaz, but we were attacked and our mosque was vandalized, we demand justice.”
“Those offering Namaz were beaten up without any provocation. It is not the first incident in Karnal. Many such incidents of attack on Muslim community have happened in the past. We don’t get much help from the police on several occasions,” said local leader Inaam Khan.
Station House Officer, Kunjpur Police Station, said that a case was registered on charges of voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, unlawful assembly and rioting under Section 295, 323 and 506 of the IPC. The police, however, claimed that the incident was just a minor scuffle over loudspeaker. No arrest has been made so far, reported News X.
This is not the first case of muslims being targeted in Haryana. Recently, muslims offering Namaz in an open ground in Gurugram were on the target of Hindu right-wing extremists.
