In yet another incident of mob rage, five persons were killed by villagers, in Maharashtra’s Dhule, on suspicion of being child kidnappers on Sunday.
Police that the five, along with a few others, were seen getting off a state transport bus in the tribal Rainpada hamlet.
When one of them tried to speak to a child, villagers, who had gathered for the weekly Sunday bazaar, thrashed them, reported NDTV.
“Five were killed in the mob fury,” police were quoted as saying.
There were rumours for the last few days that a gang of child kidnappers was active in the area. The bodies are being taken to the nearby Pimpalner hospital, the police added.
Police said that 15 people had been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
The bodies have been shifted to the rural hospital in Pimpalner and police teams were maintaining a vigil in the Rainpada area under the supervision of IG (Nashik range) Chhering Dorje and other senior officers, an official was quoted by PTI.
Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Deepak Kesarkar has appealed to people not to believe in rumours being circulated on social media.
