Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday issued a public apology to former Punjab minister and senior Akali Dal leader, Bikram Majithia, for his past allegations on the latter’s alleged involvement in drug trade.

In his apology letter issued on the letterhead of Aam Aadmi Party, Kejriwal wrote, In the recent past I made certain statements and allegations against you regarding your alleged involvement in drug trade. These statements became a political issue. Now I’ve learnt that allegations are unfounded. Hence there should be no politics on such issues.”

Kejriwal also went on to write that the damage caused ‘to your esteem, the hurt caused to your family, friends, well-wishers, followers and the loss caused to to you is regretted.”

Addressing an election rally in Amritsar in December 2016, Kejriwal had said Majithia had “played with the youth of Punjab by unleashing narco-terrorism in the state”, and promised to put him behind bars.

The Delhi chief minister had later appealed to people to not vote for Congress, saying it will help Majithia, who is “responsible for ruining the youth of Punjab”.

“Voting for Congress is like voting for Majithia. It will divide votes and help Majithia, who is responsible for ruining the youth… and must be put in jail,” he had said during a road show in Majithia’s home turf of Majitha constituency. His party had lost the assembly elections, held in February 2017.

In his letter to Majithia, Kejriwal wrote, “Because of my allegations made against you at various political rallies, public meetings, TV programs, print, electronic and social media, you filed defamation case against us in the Hon’ble Court of Amritsar.

“I hereby withdraw all my statements and allegations made against you and apologize for the same.”

Reacting to Kejriwal’s apology, the former Punjab minister tweeted, “CM @ArvindKejriwal has tendered an apology to me in the court, for all the baseless&false allegations he & his party levelled against me in drug issue. My mother suffered the most due to all this&this apology is vindication of her faith in Waheguru’s power of justice.”
