The Congress on Sunday suspended its former MP and senior leader Shakeel Ahmad from the party after he fielded himself as a rebel candidate from Madhubani parliamentary seat.
The party has also suspended its MLA from Benipatti, Bhavana Jha, for anti-party activities in regard with ongoing elections.
A statement by the Congress General Secretary Motilal Vora said, “Mr Shakeel Ahmed, ex MP, has been suspended, with immediate effect, from the Congress Party for contesting as an Independent candidate from the Madhubani Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar against the Party’s decision. Along with this Ms Bhavana Jha, MLA, Benipatti has also been suspended from the Congress Party for anti-Party activities with regard to the ongoing General Elections.”

Ahmad had first filed his nomination papers as the Congress candidate before filing a second nomination as an independent candidate from Madhubani parliamentary seat. He, however, withdrew his candidature as the Congress candidate later.
The Madhubani Lok Sabha seat has gone to the newly formed Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) as part of the seat sharing deal among the non-BJP grand alliance parties. The vIP has fielded Badrinath Purve, who’s a former RJD leader, from Madhubani against BJP MP Hukum Dev Narayan Yadav’s son Ashok Yadav, who had won from here in 2014.
Ahmad has received support from the Communist Party of India, whose state secretary Satya Narayan Singh recently told a newspaper that the party decided to support the rebel Congress leader primarily because the trend in Bihar was against the BJP.
