Farmers stripped, thrashed in police station in Madhya Pradesh

Police in Madhya Pradesh used brutal force against the protesting farmers by allegedly stripping them naked and thrashing them inside police station. The photos of half-naked farmers soon sitting inside police station went viral on social media platforms.

The incident took place in Madhya Pradesh’s Tikamgarh district.

According to reports, thousands of farmers were protesting demanding drought-hit status as part of Youth Congress campaign Khet Bachao-Kisan Bachao at Tikamgarh on Tuesday. The cops stopped their march towards collectorate office using barricades. Farmers alleged that just when they were returning home after the protest, police intercepted one of their tractors.

Youth Congress chief in Madhya Pradesh, Kunal Chaudhary, told News18, “We reached the collectorate office and wanted to hand over a memorandum to collector who asked us to send in three people inside his room to hand over the memorandum.”

The state had witnessed a brutal crackdown in June this year when at least five farmers were killed in police firing in Mandsaur area of Madhya Pradesh.

The state government had later announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore each for the families of those killed in police firing. The government has also transferred senior police and district officials. Several leaders including Rahul Gandhi were detained as they attempted to enter Mandsaur.

The news has already evoked angry reactions on social media with an overwhelming majority of users condemning the state’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan government.
