This story will break your heart and make you ponder on the collapsed healthcare system in India. A desperate man in Uttar Pradesh was forced to sell his four-year-old daughter to arrange money so that he could have his pregnant wife treated at a government hospital.
A report by ANI said that the father, identified as Arvind Banjara, had admitted his pregnant wife, Sukhdevi, to a district hospital in Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh after she developed complications. While in the government hospital, Banjara was advised to immediately arrange for blood from outside.
Left with no money, Banjara, who also has a one-year-old son Jaanu, decided to sell his four-year-old daughter Roshni for Rs 25,000.
“In the district hospital, we were told to get blood for her. They told me that she will not survive if blood is not arranged for her. I didn’t have money, so I had no other option, but to sell my child,” Banjara told news agency ANI.
“It’s not easy to sell a child, but we had no other option. We had already visited a few hospitals for treatment,” his wife Sukhdevi was quoted by the news agency.
When informed the incident, the local police reportedly moved in with lightning speed and stopped the father from selling his daughter. The cops also reportedly promised to provide financial help to Banjara.
Police Officer Amod Kumar Singh said that his team were alerted that a couple was in need of money for treatment and very disturbed. “We also heard that they were trying to sell their child. When we found out that the woman is suffering from bleeding and needs help, the Tirwa police station decided to provide full finance aid to the family,” Officer in Tirwa police station, he told ANI.
Singh said that the cops will take care of the whole treatment process.
Banjara was reportedly in tears when the SHO informed him that money for the treatment of his wife had been arranged by them.
Banjara, according to a report by DNA, broke down in tears as he thanked the cops, “Saheb you have saved not her life but my future also by making me not to sell my son. She would have died anyway hearing that our son was sold off to save her.”
