Cops launch hunt for Kashmiri research scholar after photo with AK-47 goes viral

Police have launched a hunt for a Ph.D scholar from Aligarh Muslim University after his photos holding an AK-47 rifle went viral on social media platforms.

Manaan Bashir Wani, son of Bashir Ahmad Wani and resident of Takipora village in Kupwara district, was seen displaying an AK-47 assault rifle.

“He was scheduled to return home four days back. But instead his pictures showing him with an AK-47 reached the family,” a police officer was quoted by IANS.

Cops from Jammu and Kashmir are arriving at the AMU to obtain more information on Mannan.

A police officer said that efforts were on to trace and persuade the young man to return home adding that there was no previous record of Manaan being involved in any suspicious activities.

Coming from an affluent family, Mannan was pursuing PhD in applied Geology from Aligarh Muslim University. After completing his M.Phil in geology, he moved to Aligarh. Wani’s father is a lecturer while his brother is an engineer.
