The news of at least 42 CRPF jawans being killed in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district has sent a shockwave across India. The CRPF jawans came under attack by an IED blast as they made their way through Jammu-Srinagar highway in their military vehicle on Thursday.
The death toll could be significantly higher since the condition of some of the injured soldiers is believed to be critical. CRPF Director General RR Bhatnagar said that senior officers were at the spot and the investigation was underway. “Injured are being taken care of. There were 2,500 personnel in the convoy,” Bhatnagar was quoted by news agency ANI.
Reacting to the news, Congress President Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I’m deeply disturbed by the cowardly attack on a
#CRPF convoy in J&K in which 10 of our brave men have been martyred and many others wounded. My condolences to the families of our martyrs. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “Attack on CRPF personnel in Pulwama is despicable. I strongly condemn this dastardly attack. The sacrifices of our brave security personnel shall not go in vain. The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with the families of the brave martyrs. May the injured recover quickly.”
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted, “Terrible news coming from the valley. A number of CRPF soldiers are reported to have been killed & injured in an IED blast. I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms. My prayers for the injured & condolences to the families of the bereaved.”
Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel too termed the terror attack targeting the paramilitary personnel as ‘cowardice.’ He wrote, “The horrific attack on our CRPF jawans is an act of supreme cowardice Perpetrators of such terrorist acts are out to destabilise Jammu & Kashmir but sacrifice of our brave jawans will not go in vain India stands firmly behind their families & loved ones in this hour of grief.”
Condemning the attack, senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala wrote, “Condemn the cowardly terror attack on our jawans in Pulwama, J&K today. Our homage to the 18 brave hearts who made the supreme sacrifice & condolences to their family. Uri, Pathankot, Pulwama- the terror list & compromise of National Security by Modi Govt continues unabated.”
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “Extremely shocking news coming from Pulwama (J&K). I strongly condemn the terror attack on CRPF convoy in which many casualties are feared. India must stand united in this moment of grief.”
Hours after the attack, members of the Narendra Modi’s cabinet took to Twitter to post their reactions. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal wrote, “Deeply saddened by news of the IED blast in
#Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir in which our brave CRPF Jawans have been martyred. My thoughts are with the bereaved families and prayers with our injured Jawans to recover soon.”
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley tweeted, “Attack on CRPF in
#Pulwama, J&K is a cowardice & condemnable act of terrorists. Nation salutes martyred soldiers and we all stand united with families of martyrs. We pray for speedy recovery of the injured. Terrorists will be given unforgettable lesson for their heinous act.”
