The CPI-M on Tuesday demanded the removal of Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit after his name featured in a sex audio, which has now gone viral on social media platforms.
The party issued a statement saying that it suspected the arrested professor, Nirmala Devi, was asking her students for sexual favours on behalf of Purohit.
The statement read, “Tamil Nadu CPI (M) urges President of India to recall Banwarilal Purohit as the governor of Tamil Nadu as his name has featured in the phone conversation of the assistant professor.” The party also demanded a court-monitored probe. In the audio conversation, the professor is heard saying that the Governor was not an old man while trying to lure her students using money and academic success.
The statement by the CPI-M further added that it suspected that there was a criminal nexus between the governor, governor’s office and officials belonging to the higher education department. It said that Nirmala Devi had been used as a tool and those who those behind her are very powerful people.
The statement referred to a report, also carried by Janta Ka Reporter in February, that Union Home Ministry was probing the allegations of sexual misconduct of a governor belonging to a South Indian state. The party said that the recent appointment in the universities was proof that he has violated norms.
Purohit, for his part, has denied any links with the arrested woman even though Devi has made several references to him in the leaked audio. Purohit said, “I do not know the lady… I am above politics. Strict action will be taken if someone is found guilty. We will get to know only after an inquiry.”
