According to Muzaffarpur district officials, the Mahindra Bolero SUV that hit and killed nine school children, belongs to Manoj Baitha, a BJP leader from Sitamarhi district, reported news agency IANS. Baitha was reportedly inside the car when his car ran over school children killing nine of them. The BJP leader has since then gone missing.

According to media reports, the BJP leader’s driver was drunk raising questions on the efficacy of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s much-publicised ban on alcohol in the state.

The incident took place on NH 77 under Minapur block of the district. Angry over the death of school children, local residents vandalised the school, beat up teachers and set ablaze chairs and benches there.

Mohammed Ishaq, a marginal farmer who lost his daughter and son in the accident, was quoted by Indian Express as saying, “We have been demanding the school’s relocation for a long time now. The school is barely 50 metres from the highway, and students have to cross it every day to reach the school… Teachers help them cross the highway, but today…”

The deaths of nine school children has snowballed into a full-blown controversy as the RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav lashed out at the state chief minister. In a series of tweets, Yadav wrote, “We can’t see Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi. Both are trying to protect the killer. If there’s a ban on alcohol, then where did the driver get the alcohol from.”

He also posted the photos of Baitha with senior leaders of the government including Kumar and Modi alleging that there were efforts to protect the killers of nine children.

Congress’s Sanjay Nirupam too slammed the Bihar government asking how the BJP leader in question had got hold of alcohol depite there being a ban on liquor in the state.

Samajwadi Party’s Pankhuri Pathak asked, “There’s no ban on alcohol for virtuous BJP leaders. Are these rats who used to drink alcohol seized by the authorities? Where’s the man of conscience? Will his (Nitish Kumar’s) conscience not awaken even after seeing the dead bodies of these children? Or his conscience is on vacation till next elections?”
