One more Trinamool Congress MLA, Manirul Islam, joined the BJP on Wednesday in the presence of senior BJP leaders, Kailash Vijayavargiya and Mukul Roy. Also joining the saffron party were Trinamool’s Gadadhar Hazra, Mohd Asif Iqbal and Nimai Das.
They were welcomed into their new party at the BJP’s headquarters in Delhi.
This came a day after two Trinamool MLAs, one CPI-M lawmaker and dozens of municipal councillors from different municipalities joined the BJP in Delhi.

These three MLAs included Mukul Roy’s son, Subhrangshu, Gautam Das of Gangarampur and Tusharkanti Bhattacharya of Bishnupur. Mukul Roy too was in the Trinamool before he joined the BJP, allegedly to avoid the CBI dragnet in the ponzy scam. Subhrangshu was suspended by the Trinamool for six years for ‘demeaning the party.’
Taking a dig at Trinamool’s disintegration, West Bengal Congress chief, Adhir Chowdhury, had said that this was a poetic justice that members of Mamata Banerjee’s army were deserting her.
একদিন আমারও মনে হয়েছিল ― History has a nasty habit of repeating itself বলবো, নাকি বলবো ― Poetic Justice !
ভাবছি।— Adhir Chowdhury (@adhirrcinc) May 28, 2019
The next assembly elections, scheduled to be held in West Bengal, is only two years away. In the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls, the BJP won 18 seats, their highest ever tally in a state, considered to be a bastion for Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee.
