Dawood’s brother was picked up while watching KBC, was not given any lifeline or options though India’s most wanted Dawood Ibrahim’s hideout may continue to be speculative over the decades, however, his younger brother, Iqbal Kaskar, was arrested by the Thane Police Crime Branch on Monday.
Sources confirmed that Iqbal, who lives in Bhendi Bazaar, was arrested from his residence with regards to a case registered against him by a Thane-based builder.
According to the builder, as demanded by Iqbal, he had paid him some money in the past, however, when his demands did not stop, he had not resort but to approach the Thane police.
“We arrested Iqbal after inquiries confirmed his involvement in the offence. We might arrest some more accused in the case soon,” a Thane police officer said.
Thane Police Commissioner Parambir Singh said that Iqbal was enjoying his biryani while watching the popular “Kaun Banega Crorepati” series on Monday night, when he was picked up from his residence.
Kaskar was picked up from the home of his sister, Haseena Parker, late on Monday by a crack team of the Thane Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) and later placed under arrest. He was produced before a court today and has been sent to police custody for eight days along with two other aides of Dawood Ibrahim.
“Iqbal Kaskar demanded four flats and Rs. 30 lakh as ransom from a builder. The names of some other builders and politicians have also emerged during the investigation,” Mr Singh told reporters.
The police are now examining whether the much dreaded Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) can be applied to Iqbal Kaskar and his brother Dawood, who is believed to be in Pakistan.
Mr. Singh also confirmed that Iqbal Kaskar had been running the extortion racket for quite some time and on Monday night the AEC finally arrested him.
The police chief said that Iqbal had been threatening and making extortion calls to several builders in Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai over the past few years.
