Heavily armed militants stormed a battalion headquarters of the Army in North Kashmir’s Uri town in the wee hours today, killing 17 soldiers and injuring 19 other personnel in the terror strike in which four ultras were neutralised.

Explosions and gunfire erupted as the militants attacked the camp, which is located barely few metres away from the Army’s Brigade Headquarters in Uri town, 102 kms from here, around 4 AM, official sources said.

The jawans of the Dogra Regiment were sleeping in a tent which caught fire due the explosion. The fire also engulfed the nearby barracks, the sources said.

17 jawans were killed in the terror attack, the Northern Command of the Army said.

19 other personnel were injured in the strike in which four militants were killed.

Social media users have been quick to remind Prime Minister Narendra Modi about his hawkish approach towards Pakistan while seeking votes during 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Many users also posted Modi’s old tweets condemning the then Manmohan Singh government for being weak in the face of similar terror attacks by Pakistan.

Some journalists also questioned the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s silence.

Parrikar has been news for all sorts of wrong reasons. Not so long ago, he had confessed to being part of the team, which carried out a dirty campaign against Aamir Khan after the actor criticised the environment of intolerance in the country.

On Saturday, Parrikar described him as a disciplined RSS worker while also mocking Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s tongue surgery to rid his chronic cough.
