Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad trolled for posting photo with non-existent ‘pad women’

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad faced incessant social media trolling on Twitter on Sunday after he posted a photo of his meeting with a ‘group of women’, who had set up a manufacturing unit for sanitary pads.

Prasad wrote, “It was heartening to interact with the village women who have set up sanitary pad manufacturing unit in Digi Gaon Dhanauri Kalan. This has not only created a source of livelihood but also promoted awareness about menstrual hygiene. This is part of #StreeSwabhiman initiative of CSC.”

Soon, the minister began to face trolling as users pointed out that there was no woman in the photo of his interaction with women.

Perhaps embarrassed by online trolling, Prasad posted another photo six hours later. In this photo (see below), Prasad was seen standing next to a woman while other women stood in the background. He wrote, “Proud of these women of Dhanauri Kalan village in UP who are not only creating awareness about menstrual health but also making low cost sanitary pads, as part of #StreeSwabhiman movement of CSC. They are indeed breaking barriers & transforming lives.”

Prasad is a part of the BJP-led government at the Centre. The central government was widely criticised by feminist groups for its decision to levy 12% GST on sanitary pads.
