Social media criticise PM Modi for skipping Lal Bahadur Shastri’s memorial, Delhi CM says ‘utterly wrong’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday chose to do away with an important protocol- not visiting the memorial of former prime minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri’s, on his birth anniversary.

This led to widespread criticism on social media, where an overwhelming majority felt that Modi had insulted the former prime minister.  Soon #ModiDisrespectsShashtri became a top twitter trend.

Anil Shastri, the former prime minister’s son, attacked Modi for his decision to not visit the memorial.

PM Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by visiting his memorial but did not visit Shastri’s memorial.

Shashtri, a tall Congress leader, was India’s second prime minister, who coined the phrase ‘Jai Jawan, Jain Kisan.’

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his shock on PM choosing to stay away from Shashtri’s memorial on the latter’s birth anniversary.

He said, ” This morning when I went to pay my tribute to him (Shastri), I found out that the centre had stopped the funds to commemorate Shastriji’s birth anniversary from this year. Then I was told that the prime minister did not even visit his memorial. I think disrespecting Shashtriji is utterly wrong. I request the central government to officially commemorate Shastri’s birth anniversary with the same respect as we do for Mahatma Gandhi. ”

Shashtri was posthumously accorded Bharat Ratna. He died soon after signing a peace accord with Pakistan in Tashkent in 1966.

Narendra Modi on Friday tweeted a photo of him paying tribute to Shastri’s memorial in Tashkent during his visit to the central Asian country in July this year.

Here are how twitter users have reacted to Modi not visiting Shastri’s memorial.
