Faced with corruption allegations, Rijiju threatens to beat up with shoes

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday threatened to beat up those ‘planting’ news of corruption against him with showed if they visited Arunachal Pradesh.

Rijiju was angry with a report published in the Indian Express that accused him and his distant cousin of corruption.

The Congress said that it had “audio proof” of Rijiju’s involvement in the scam.

According to the IE report, Rijiju; his cousin, a contractor in Arunachal Pradesh, Goboi Rijiju; and several top officials of North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), including its Chairman and Managing Director, have been named in a 129-page report by the PSU’s Chief Vigilance Officer that alleges corruption in the construction of two dams for 600 MW Kameng Hydro Electric Project, one of the biggest hydro-electric projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

Brushing aside the allegations Rijiju asked if helping one’s own people be termed as ‘corruption’.

“To help your own people is corruption? Is helping people corruption? This news is nothing but a mischief. I did write a letter but there’s nothing suspicious about it” Rijiju was quoted by ANI.

He later tweeted with the copy of his letter and reiterating his earlier stance on helping tribals.

His tweet read, “Really cheap! This is the copy of representation I received & forwarding letter to Power Minister. Is it a corruption helping poor Tribals?”

The BJP’s political rivals have already stepped up their attack against the embattled minister. Congress’ Shehzad Poonawalla said, “Serious corruption allegations against Kiren Rijiju to help cousin(sub contractor) flagged by probe Will Modi act?.”

Kapil Mishra, water and tourism minister in Delhi government, urged him to step down in view of the serious charges of corruption levelled against him.

He wrote, “Rijiju should step down if there is any morality left in BJP??”
