At ‘Save the Constitution’ campaign Rahul Gandhi says Narendra Modi is crushing media’s voice; a ‘journalist’ shouts ‘sahi baat hai’

In a stinging attack, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), while launching the ‘Save the Constitution’ campaign at Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium.

Gandhi quoted Modi’s statements made in the past saying that the Valmiki (Dalits) community continued to clean toilets for attaining spirituality and not feeding their family.

“This is the thinking of our prime minister. This is what he had said not me,” Gandhi quipped prompting his supporters to chant Narendra Modi murdabad. The Congress president then quickly chided his supporters to stay away from chanting such slogans. He said that Dalits were angry with Modi because he had no place for Dalits and women in India.

Atrocities are only increasing. Una, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh or Maharashtra, Dalits are being suppressed, thrashed and murdered. When Dalits were being attacked in Una (Gujarat), the same man who saw spirituality in Dalits cleaning toilets, this man did not speak a word. It was only after the Congress led the protest, he had tears in his eyes.”

Gandhi said that Modi had severely hurt India’s secular and tolerant image abroad. He also said that the PM was trying to divide the country in the name of caste and religion by weakening the country’s constitution and constitutional institutions.

“Modiji is bothered only about Modiji. PM Modi is only bothered about becoming the PM again. He isn’t bothered about rapes,” said the Congress President.

Gandhi said that nothing was possible without the institutions including the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Election Commission and the Supreme Court. “But today the people with RSS ideologies are being appointed in all constitutional institutions. Usually, people go to the judiciary for justice. For the first time, four top judges of the Supreme Court went to people asking for justice,” Gandhi added.

Gandhi dared Modi to allow him to speak on the Rafale deal for just 15 minutes inside the parliament. “Just give me 15 minutes to speak on how crores of rupees have been looted in the Rafale deal and Nirav Modi. Modi ji wouldn’t be able to stay there.,” he said.

The Rafale scam was first exposed by Janta Ka Reporter last year.

Gandhi caused plenty of laughter in the audience when he addressed the members of the media adding that Modi had suppressed their voices too. Pointing to a female journalist, Gandhi said, “We have friends from the media here. Their voices are often crushed.” One man from the audience shouted, ‘You’re absolutely right.” Gandhi then turned his attention to that voice and said, ‘Just see. Finally a courageous journalist spoke. Look at this (female journalist), she’s also smiling. She’s not able to speak right now. But deep down inside her, she wants to speak out. Perhaps, she will also speak in 2-3 months.”

Gandhi also sought to remind everyone how the Congress had worked for the country’s prestige for 70 years but it was all undone by the BJP-led government. He said that PM Modi had damaged India’s image severely in the past four years”, he claimed.

The Congress president said, “We will never allow the BJP and RSS to even touch our constitution. The people of India will speak their ‘Mann ki Baat’ in 2019. Modiji sees spirituality in making pakodas, and cleaning toilets. But for himself, he only sees spirituality in becoming Prime Minister.”

The Congress will continue its nationwide ‘Save the Constitution” campaign for nearly a year till 14 April 2019.
